For the second straight stage this World Cup season, Canada won gold and set a new world record time in the men's team sprint, as Gilmore Junio (Calgary, AB), Alex Boisvert-Lacroix (Sherbrooke, QC), and Vincent De Haître (Cumberland, ON) skated to victory in 1:19.52, ahead of Norway (1:19.84) and the United States (1:20.58).

Canada stood at the top of the podium after its effort in the men's team sprint and Ted-Jan Bloemen and Ivanie Blondin also added to Canada's medal count at the long track speed skating World Cup season opener in Heerenveen, Netherlands on Sunday.

The trio of Laurent Dubreuil (Levis, Que.), Alexandre St-Jean (Quebec City), and Vincent De Haitre (Cumberland, Ont.) finished with a time of one minute, 19.55 seconds, followed by Norway at 1:20.00 and Russia at 1:20.94.

Earlier, Bloemen, who was born in Leiderdorp, Netherlands, earned silver in the 5000-metre race with a time of 6:14.95 seconds – 2.07 seconds behind Sven Kramer, who won on home soil. Norway's Sverre Lunde Pedersen was third at 6:15.81.

Ivanie Blondin d'Ottawa et Vincent De Haître de Cumberland seront certainement parmi les espoirs de médaille du Canada en patinage de vitesse lors des prochains Jeux olympiques de Pyeongchang. Les deux athlètes sont présentement aux Pays-Bas pour disputer la première Coupe du monde de la saison, qui sera à saveur olympique.

Vincent De Haître est au sommet de son art. Il y a quelques semaines, lors des sélections des Coupes du monde disputées à Calgary, non seulement il a été le meilleur Canadien au 1500 mètres, mais il a aussi amélioré son record personnel. Plus tôt cette année, il a également fracassé le record canadien au 1000 mètres.La saison dernière, non seulement il a remporté sa première médaille d'or individuel sur le Circuit de la Coupe du monde, mais il est monté cinq fois sur le podium. À l'épreuve du 1000 mètres, il a remporté l'argent aux Championnats mondiaux de distances individuelles et il a terminé deuxième au classement cumulatif du circuit de la Coupe du monde. On peut officiellement dire que Vincent De Haître est maintenant un des meilleurs patineurs au monde.Comment Vincent explique-t-il tout le succès qu'il a connu lors des derniers mois? « C'est mon habilité d'apprendre rapidement! C'est une qualité que j'ai toujours eu, mais là que je commence à être bon, ça paraît! », affirme-t-il avec un sourire dans la voix.

Canada came out hot at the first World Cup long track speed skating event of the season from the Netherlands on Saturday, claiming a gold and silver medal in men's events.

Laurent Dubreuil started by taking gold in the 500-metre event, and Vincent De Haitre followed shortly after with silver in the 1500m.

Ivanie Blondin gave Canada a trio of medals with a silver in the mass start. 

Dubreuil, from Levis, Que., finished with a time of 34.80 seconds in the 500, besting the Netherlands contingent that finished second through fifth. It was the first World Cup gold of Dubreuil's career.

CALGARY - Ivanie Blondin, Vincent de Haître, Denny Morrison et Ted-Jan Bloemen seront les têtes d'affiche de l'équipe canadienne de patinage de vitesse en longue piste qui participera aux premières épreuves de la Coupe du monde cette saison.

L'équipe a été formée à la suite des Sélections d'automne la semaine dernière à Calgary.

Calgary fera partie des quatre premières escales de la saison en Coupe du monde, du 1er au 3 décembre.

Blondin, d'Ottawa, a gagné le départ de masse au Championnat du monde en 2016, ainsi que la médaille de bronze au 5000 m lors des Mondiaux de distances individuelles de cette année.
